On the Sanctity of Life

I think it is quite fair to state that from a biblical perspective abortion is not appropriate. It is clear from the Genesis account that on the final day of Creation, God

...made mankind in Our own image, after Our likeness, and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts, and over all of the earth, and over everything that creeps upon the earth. So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him, male and female He created them. (Gen. 1:26-27, (AMP))

Later in the Book of Genesis, when the curse of sin had progressed to an abominable level, God destroyed all of mankind except a tiny remnant, the family of Noah. Among God’s first commands to Noah when the world was once again habitable, to be found in Gen. 9:5-6, was the beginning of civil government and the institution of the practice of capital punishment:

And surely for your lifeblood I will require an accounting; from every beast I will require it; and from man, from every man [who spills another's lifeblood] I will require a reckoning. Whoever sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God He made man. (Gen. 9:5-6, (AMP))

I think it is clear that while God gave humans authority (some translations say "dominion") over all of the earth, He did not give humans authority over other people, at that time.

Later, when mankind had thoroughly demonstrated their inability to live peaceably with each other, He established a simple hierarchy of human authority over people who so despised God’s own authority that they would murder another, thus assuming for themselves a right only belonging to God Himself, Who as Creator is the only One Who may take human life.

God gave mankind the authority to execute murderers. We know through the remainder of the Jewish Torah (the Christian Old Testament) that general authority became the foundation of civil government. The details of the process of determining guilt and the method of execution were articulated later in the Scriptures, along with the means to contest the charges by the accused, and mitigating influences affecting the punishment.

At issue here is the absolute sanctity of human life. No other created being bears the "image of God." It is for this reason human life is distinct among all other creatures.

Human life is absolutely precious, and a gift. Our Founding Fathers understood this well and enshrined it in the Declaration of Independence. Civil government is responsible, they said, to "secure" the unalienable Right to Life. Life, both from a biblical as well as scientific/medical perspective, begins at conception. There are numerous expressions of this truth in the Scripture, for example:

For You [God] did form my inward parts; You did knit me together in my mother's womb. My frame was not hidden from You when I was being formed in secret intricately and curiously wrought... Your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in Your book all the days [of my life] were written before ever they took shape, when as yet there was none of them. (Ps. 139:13-16, (AMP))

the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a pregnant woman... (Ecc. 11:5,(AMP))

Thus says the Lord, Who made you and formed you from the womb... (Is. 44:2, (AMP))

...You are He Who took me out of the womb... I was cast upon You from my very birth; from my mother’s womb You have been my God. (Ps. 22:9-10, (AMP))

From the community of science and medicine there are numerous scholarly statements regarding the truth of the Scripture, namely that human life begins at conception. Here are several references you may review to satisfy your curiosity:

The predominance of human biological research confirms that human life begins at conception—fertilization. At fertilization, the human being emerges as a whole, genetically distinct, individuated zygotic living human organism, a member of the species Homo sapiens, needing only the proper environment in order to grow and develop...

The scientific community has confirmed what the Scriptures always have attested. Legal scholars and judges have affirmed this as well.

In my opinion, the spirit of our original, foundational laws is clear that our civil government, at every level MUST “secure” the Right to Life and strive to protect the life of every American from the moment of conception until natural death, except as prescribed by the due process of the law.

Civil government may cause the death of a person who has been convicted of a capital crime in accordance with the applicable laws.

Within the womb, the new person cannot commit a crime, cannot be adjudged guilty or convicted, and certainly may not legally be executed.

All laws inferior to the U.S. Constitution that tolerate, assist, or encourage abortion, even as a convenience to the society at large, should such arguments be made, are illegal and must be repealed. The infamous Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision was wrong and must be overturned as soon as an inferior case can rise to the jurisdiction of that Court.
